What to do with stale bread? 7 tasty ideas
Bread consistently tops the lists of most wasted products in Dutch households. A shame, because dry bread is the base of a surprising amount of good food. Seven ideas to rescue that half bag from the day before yesterday.
Seven ways to use stale bread
- French toast: dip slices in a mix of egg, milk and cinnamon and fry until golden brown.
- Croutons: cube the bread, toss with olive oil and herbs and roast until crispy in the oven or a pan.
- Bread pudding: dry bread, milk, egg, sugar and raisins in the oven; the classic leftovers recipe.
- Breadcrumbs: grind bone-dry bread finely and store it in a jar; free breadcrumbs for schnitzels and oven dishes.
- Toasties: slightly older bread is firmer and turns extra crispy in the sandwich press.
- Panzanella or bruschetta: toasted stale bread with tomato, olive oil and garlic.
- Freeze it: not getting to it now? Freeze bread in small portions and toast it straight from the freezer later.
Even better: prevent bread from being left over
Don't buy more than you will eat, keep bread in a bread bin instead of the fridge (where it actually goes stale faster) and freeze the rest right away.
And did you know bakers have bread left over every day too? Many bakeries sell their daily surplus at the end of the day as a YumBox via YumBite: a surprise bag of fresh bread and pastries at a minimum 40% discount. You rescue bread that would otherwise be thrown away and discover the bakery around the corner at the same time.
